Official Game Rules

These rules ensure fair play, safety, and a smooth experience for every team. All participants must review and agree to the following before the hunt begins. Captains are responsible for making sure their teammates understand and follow all rules during gameplay.

1. Game Overview

This scavenger hunt is a competitive, citywide adventure taking place across North Hollywood and surrounding areas. Teams will race to complete tasks of varying difficulty, each worth a designated number of points. Some clues are simple, others require strategy, creativity, or travel — but all tasks are designed to be fun, engaging, and achievable within the boundaries of the game.

Your team’s goal is to earn 300 points or accumulate the highest score by the final check-in time. Tasks may be completed in any order, and not all tasks must be completed to win.

Most tasks are free, though a small number may involve purchasing an inexpensive item. These tasks are optional and can be skipped without penalty. Teams are encouraged to think creatively, collaborate, and enjoy the experience as they explore the city together.

2. Team Structure & Roles

Each team should consist of up to 5 players, with five being the recommended number for optimal gameplay. Each player should fully understand their responsibility to keep the group organized, efficient, and safe. All roles assigned on your team’s registration form are final and must remain the same throughout the hunt. This ensures fairness, structure, and accountability during gameplay.

Only the Team Captain may take on multiple roles when needed.

2.1 Recommended Roles:

  • Driver — Safely transports the team between locations. Must obey all traffic laws at all times.
  • Navigator — Handles mapping, route planning, and keeping the team within boundaries.
  • Photographer — Captures all required photo/video proof for submissions.
  • Runner — Quickly completes tasks that require movement away from the vehicle.
  • Captain (Alternate) — Communicates with the host, submits all proof, requests hints when needed, and ensures compliance with all rules.

Important:

  • Roles may not be switched once the game begins.
  • Only the captain may double up or assist with other roles as needed.
  • All other players must stick to their assigned role for the duration of the hunt.
  • All team members must remain together unless a specific clue explicitly says otherwise.

3. Gameplay Rules

3.1 Completing Tasks
Tasks may be completed in any order unless a clue specifies otherwise. Not all tasks must be completed to win, and teams should use strategy to decide which missions to prioritize based on distance, difficulty, and point value.

  • Each task includes clear instructions and a point value.
  • Complete tasks exactly as written to avoid disqualification.
  • If the submission does not clearly meet the requirements, the host may decline the entry.
  • Each task can only be completed once per team.

3.2 Submitting Proof
All proof must be submitted in real time by the team captain to the official group chat. This ensures fair scoring and prevents teams from holding completed tasks until the end.

  • Do not stockpile photos or videos.
  • Submissions must be sent immediately after completing the task.
  • Late submissions may not be accepted.
  • Each submission must include the task number in the message.

3.3 Staying Together
All team members must remain together at all times unless a specific clue states otherwise. Submissions showing split teams will not be accepted.

3.4 Allowed vs. Not Allowed Actions

Allowed

  • Asking strangers to participate (respectfully)
  • Using Google Maps or other navigation tools
  • Using any mode of transportation (walk, drive, rideshare, bike)
  • Buying optional items for certain tasks
  • Getting a stranger to buy the optional item for you (bonus points apply)

Not Allowed

  • Completing tasks at a team member’s home
  • Using personal pets or animals for animal-related tasks
  • Submitting staged or pre-existing photos
  • Falsifying timestamped media
  • Splitting up the team
  • Breaking any traffic or safety laws
  • Interfering with other teams’ progress

3.5 Role Enforcement
Roles assigned during registration are final. Only the captain may take on additional duties if necessary. All other team members must fulfill the role they registered under for the entire game.

3.6 Optional Purchases
Some tasks may involve purchasing a small item. These tasks are optional and can be skipped without penalty. Costs associated with transportation or optional purchases are at your team’s discretion.

3.7 Hints
If your team is stuck, the captain may request a hint in the group chat. When a hint is requested:

  • The hint will be sent to all teams, not just yours.
  • Details on hint penalties will be included on the task card if applicable.

3.8 Conduct
Teams must be respectful, safe, and mindful of public property at all times. Disruptive behavior, disrespect toward the public, or interfering with others may result in loss of points or disqualification.

4. Boundaries & Movement

The scavenger hunt takes place within a defined zone covering parts of North Hollywood, Burbank, and surrounding areas. All tasks must be completed within these boundaries. Teams may navigate the play area using any mode of transportation they choose, provided they remain together and follow all safety rules.

4.1 Boundary Limits:

  • West: 405 Freeway
  • North: Burbank
  • East: 5 Freeway near the LA Zoo
  • South: Melrose Avenue

Crossing the boundary accidentally is allowed, but any tasks completed outside the play zone will not count. Teams are responsible for monitoring their location and ensuring they remain within the designated area at all times.

4.2 Transportation & Movement Rules:

  • Teams may walk, drive, bike, or use rideshare.
  • The entire team must remain together for all tasks unless a clue specifically allows separation.
  • No extra time will be granted for teams using slower forms of transportation.
  • Any transportation costs are the responsibility of your team.
  • Teams must obey all traffic laws and prioritize safety over speed.

5. Scoring & Winning

Every task in your clue packet is assigned a specific point value. Your team’s objective is to earn 300 points as quickly as possible, or accumulate the highest score by the final check-in time. Points are awarded only after the host verifies the accuracy of your submission.

5.1 How Points Are Earned:

  • Points are awarded based on the value assigned to each task in the clue packet.
  • Only the team captain may submit proof to the group chat.
  • Submissions must be clear, fully meet the task requirements, and be sent in real time.
  • If a submission is unclear, incomplete, or missing required elements, the host may decline it.
  • Each task may only be completed once per team.

Tasks vary in difficulty. Some are worth 1–2 points (“quick wins”), while others offer higher point values and require more travel, strategy, creativity, or teamwork. Your team must decide which mix of tasks will get you to 300 points the fastest.

5.2 Hint Penalties:

  • Teams may request a hint for any clue.
  • Hints must be requested only by the captain in the group chat.
  • When a hint is given, all teams receive the same hint.
  • There is no penalty for asking for a hint, unless otherwise noted on the task card.
  • There is no limit to the number of hints your team can ask for.

5.3 Winning the Game:

  • The first team to reach 300 points should immediately notify the host in the group chat.
  • Gameplay does NOT stop when a team announces they have reached 300.
  • All teams may continue completing tasks until 4:00 pm, especially if:
    • they believe they are close to 300,
    • they believe their competitors may have invalid submissions, or
    • they want to secure extra points to protect against deductions.
  • Reaching 300 points does not guarantee a win — all points must be reviewed and verified by the host.
  • Teams are encouraged to aim for more than 300 points to account for possible invalid or unclear submissions.
  • At 4:00 pm, all teams must immediately stop gameplay and head to the final location.
  • The winner is determined at the final location based on the verified highest score.

6. Conduct & Safety Requirements

All participants are expected to conduct themselves responsibly and respectfully throughout the game. Safety is the highest priority, and any behavior that endangers your team, the public, or other players may result in point deductions or disqualification.

6.1 Safety Rules

  • All traffic laws must be obeyed at all times.
  • Running across streets, parking lots, or unsafe areas is prohibited.
  • Avoid blocking entrances, disturbing businesses, or creating safety hazards.
  • If a team member is injured, stop immediately and assess the situation. Call 911 if necessary.
  • Use good judgment when interacting with the public; always ask permission before including strangers in photos or videos.

6.2 Conduct Standards

  • Team members must treat all participants, bystanders, and property with respect.
  • Disruptive, aggressive, or disrespectful behavior is not acceptable.
  • Teams may not intentionally interfere with another team’s progress.
  • Any form of cheating, falsifying evidence, or staging photos may result in disqualification.

7. Registration, Fees & Check-In

A $10 team registration fee is required to participate in the scavenger hunt. This fee helps cover game materials, go-bag supplies, printed clue packets, and the hosted dinner celebration following the event. Your registration is not confirmed until payment and the team form have been submitted.

7.1 Registration Requirements

  • One team captain must complete the official registration form.
  • The $10 team registration fee must be submitted before the team is confirmed.
  • Registration without payment is considered incomplete.
  • Only the team captain may communicate with the host during gameplay.
  • Every team must list all players and their assigned roles (roles are final once submitted).

7.2 Check-In Instructions

  • Teams must arrive at Magnolia Park between 11:40 am and 12:00 pm.
  • Late arrivals may receive their materials after the game has already begun. No additional time will be granted if you are late.
  • The captain must check in with the host to receive the team’s go-bag and clue packet.
  • The game officially begins once all teams have checked in and a group message is sent.

7.3 Go-Bag Contents

  • Water bottles
  • First-aid kit
  • Printed clue packet
  • Rulebook
  • Optional task tools
  • Pens/markers
  • Gas card for the driver

Teams are responsible for keeping their go-bag and its contents in good condition throughout the game. Lost or damaged materials will not be replaced once gameplay begins. Please store any completed task items in your go-bag and bring this bag to the final location.

8. Dinner & End-of-Game Procedures

The scavenger hunt concludes with a hosted dinner celebration at a secret final location. Teams will gather, relax, review scores, and enjoy the rest of the evening together. The final location will not be revealed until the end of the game.

8.1 Game End Time

  • Gameplay officially ends at 4:00 pm.
  • All teams must immediately stop completing tasks at 4:00 pm and begin heading to the final location.
  • The host will send a message in the group chat signaling that the game has ended.
  • Any submissions sent after 4:00 pm will not be counted.

8.2 What Happens When a Team Reaches 300 Points

If a team reaches 300 points before 4:00pm, they must notify the host in the group chat immediately. However, this does not end the game. All teams may continue collecting points until 4:00 pm if they so choose. Final scores are determined only after the host reviews and verifies all submissions at the final location. Teams are encouraged to exceed 300 points to protect against invalid submission or deducted points.

8.3 Final Location & Check-In

  • The final location is revealed as part of the final clue, found in a sealed envelope inside each team’s go-bag.
  • Teams may not open the envelope until they either reach 300 points or believe they have completed enough tasks and are ready to head to the ending location.
  • All teams must arrive at the final destination no later than 4:30 pm.
  • Upon arrival, teams must check in with the host so scoring can begin.

8.4 Dinner Celebration

Dinner is included with your team registration and will be served once all teams have arrived and check-in is complete. All confirmed participants may stay for dinner, socializing, and the award ceremony. Dietary restrictions should be communicated by text to the host.

8.5 Winner Announcement

  • Scores will be calculated based on verified submissions only.
  • The winner is the team with the highest verified score after all deductions, and invalid tasks, are applied.
  • The winning team will be announced during the dinner celebration.
  • In case of a tie, the arrival time to the final destination will be the tie breaker.

9. Disqualification Conditions

The following actions may lead to point deductions, removal of submissions, or full disqualification at the host’s discretion. These rules ensure fair play, safety, and respect for all participants and the public.

Teams may be disqualified for:

  • Breaking traffic laws or engaging in unsafe behavior
  • Splitting up the team when not permitted
  • Submitting fake, staged, or pre-existing photos/videos
  • Completing tasks at a team member’s home
  • Using personal pets or animals for animal-related tasks
